STRANGE CUSTOMS

Turning the U.S. Customs House into the National Museum
of the American Indian was not a decision made without an unintended irony. It's strange that a government office that managed immigrants and incoming trade now exhibits the artifacts of native nations decimated by the incoming.

A marvelous building, constructed from 1902-1907, it was designed by Cass Gilbert, who later went on to design the Woolworth Building and the U.S. Supreme Court.
